So you would like to offer help to Sustainable Global Gardens as we work towards Millennium Development Goal No 1, the eradication of global poverty and hunger. There are several ways in which you could provide support.
You can make a donation to Sustainable Global Gardens. You can do this by sending an email to SGG’s Treasurer at Carole Keeley and requesting a standing order form or a single payment as well as details concerning Gift Aid. If you prefer you can contact us by post at:
20 Kensington Gardens
Whitley Bay
Tyne and Wear

UK.
If you would like to know how your money could be spent:
- £5 will purchase 5-30 young trees ready for planting depending on variety and size. The cheapest trees bought for tree-planting in Tanzania in 2007 cost about 15p, but well-established fruit trees can be much more costly. SGG has been asked to promote tree-planting both around Soni village in the Usambaras & in Rombo district on the eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
- £10 will buy a pig. One of OWDF’s farmer groups has invested in pig-breeding to generate sustainable income. See Kenya projects.
- £12 will help support an HIV orphan for a year. £1 per month can provide improved home-based care for an HIV orphan in Kenya.
- £15 will buy a goat. See Kenya projects.
- £50 will install a modern toilet for a rural household.
- £100 will buy a moneymaker pump. Such footpumps are used to encourage dry season irrigation of fruit &vegetables. This provides better nutrition for rural families and also a source of income. At present these pumps are being shared among farmer groups of upto 15 households who are members of OWDF in Busia District, Kenya. This means food production can be improved at a cost of less than £1 per person.
Furthermore, Sustainable Global Gardens encourages supporters to indicate how they would like their donations invested. Read our various projects on this website, and then contact paul_keeley@hotmail.com to discuss how best to invest your gift to Africa.
We hope you will invest far more than money in Africa. Sustainable Global Gardens would like you to invest more time for the good of the world’s poor and hungry. There are several ways in which you can do this:
- Get together a group of friends and have fun organising a fund-raising event. In the two years since it was established we have raised money for African projects through school non-uniform days, dances & ceilidhs, open invitation meals, coffee mornings, and concerts. Enjoy encouraging your local community to socialise and enjoy themselves for a good cause.
- If you work in a school or are involved with a self-education group, remember that education of the public on issues related to global poverty & hunger is one of the objectives of Sustainable Global Gardens. We provide day courses appropriate for International Baccalaureate/A-level students, and also talks for adults. Invite us to tell you more about our overseas projects and the global struggle to make poverty history.
- Some of our supporters would like the opportunity to travel. You can do this by undertaking short-term voluntary work at one of our projects. This sounds a very attractive proposition to many people, but please remember two critical points. One is that all our volunteers are self-funded. Two is that we suggest such volunteers need to work for at least a month before they are going to have a significant positive impact on the host community. We support the principles of ecotourism, but we are not in that business. If you want ‘the holiday of a lifetime in the Tropics’ with a few days visiting the locals, we do not provide you with that experience. If you are willing to pay for the privilege of working unpaid under difficult conditions for four weeks or more, we can offer you the possibility of a life-changing experience. My teaching career began in 1972 working for £12/month at a school near Tabora in Tanzania: I am still living on the riches gained from that experience.
- Several of our supporters like to concentrate all their efforts on one specific project. Some of them have the time, energy and skills to take responsibility for that project. We encourage supporters to ‘adopt’ and manage a project of their choice because this will enable Sustainable Global Gardens to make a much greater contribution to the eradication of global poverty and hunger.
